This summer, we are doing a manuscript study (also called an inductive Bible study) through 1 John. If you are unfamiliar with how to do a manuscript study, please read the how-to below.
If you have not yet received your manuscript copy of 1 John, please pick one up at the Information Table on the patio after Sunday services.
1. Getting Prepared (Romans 12:1-2) This may be a new process for you, keep at it.
-
Be open and allow God to speak his promises, challenges, and truth into your heart.
-
Be equipped to read the Bible in a way that helps you discover what it says, what it means, and how you can apply it to your life.
-
Be objective by allowing scripture to speak for itself. The goal is a transformed life with a deep and abiding relationship with Jesus Christ.
2. Getting Acquainted (2 Timothy 3:16-17) Three levels of participation.
The complete text of 1 John includes room for you to write questions, observations, and insights. Underline key words and phrases, circle or draw lines between repeated or similar words. Use different colors to identify themes.
-
Individual study: Set a time each day to read, study, and reflect.
-
Sunday message: Receiving teaching and illumination on the text in context of worship.
-
Group study: Get together with a few others to discuss what you’ve learned.
3. Getting Started (Proverbs 2:3-5) Week One
-
Read the entire text of 1 John.
-
What are your major impressions of the book?
-
What do you learn about love?
4. Getting Through It (John 16:13-15) The Following Weeks
-
Prayer: Ask God to speak to you and illuminate the text for you.
-
Observation: What does the passage say? (Ask who, what, where, when, and how?)
-
Interpretation: What does it mean? Write a short title for each section.
-
Application: What is one thing the Lord is saying to me through this passage?
-
Memorize: Select one verse each week and memorize it.
