“Chapel” – what’s in a name? Today we worship in the “sanctuary.” Our original gathering place as a community of faith in the late 1940’s was in a
one-room military “chapel” re-located near Lomas Santa Fe Dr., west of Highway 101. We moved into a newly built “chapel” in 1958-59 on our present site which is the current Discipleship Center behind our sanctuary. Our present sanctuary was completed in 1975 and expanded at the end of 1986. That expansion campaign, initiated in 1984, included a remodeled chapel in the space of the 1958-59 chapel which had become our office space. A new office building was envisioned on the corner of Lomas Santa Fe Dr. and Stevens Ave. In 1993 an expansion plan proposed to build a new chapel and office space on that same corner.
Soil issues, building restrictions, parking space requirements, and ongoing growth as a congregation were underlying factors in these plans not being realized.
Opportunity to acquire the Lomas Santa Fe Executive Plaza at the corner of Stevens Ave. and San Rodolfo developed, finally culminating in 1995 with the purchase. No chapel was planned and the space was converted into our present offices – now our Ministry Center. Further development of the space over time included our student facilities, Hispanic ministry, and Mature Adult Center. In 2000, plans were conceived to remodel space on the lower level to provide a small “chapel” and Mature Adult Lounge with a view onto the atrium as a meditation garden. Costs in the range of $750,000 were prohibitive at the time and the plan was not realized.
In the Fall of 2007, larger worship space for our growing Hispanic fellowship was needed and led to entertaining the simple remodel of room 105 to create a worshipful space to accommodate 150 people for around $30,000. As that was pursued, it was determined that the “worshipful” space could be further enhanced for less than $90,000 and become our “chapel” appropriate for weekly use by our Hispanic fellowship, intimate weddings and memorials, prayer and worship services, and mid-size meeting space.
A lot of volunteer help, donated materials, and monies earmarked for a chapel culminated in our “current chapel” opening in December 2007 and already enjoying meaningful use in these months of 2008 leading up to our dedication this Sunday, June 15. See our dedication card for details.
