El Porvenir Community Development Priorities

1.  Welding Enterprise. A loan was made to Sesai Lopez to set up a welding enterprise.

2.  Sewing Enterprise. In 2001 our team held sewing and knitting classes for the women.  In 2002 we purchased 10 treadle sewing machines. The community set up a classroom and we began to teach the women how to use them. At this time a sewing instructor comes to El Porvenir once a week for ongoing instruction. In time this will allow women to fulfill the clothing needs of the family and generate additional revenues from sales.

3.  Adobe Blocks. In the near future we hope to be able to purchase a machine so that members of the community can make adobe blocks, both for construction and for sale.

4.  Fish Farm. A fish farm with the capacity for 5000 tilapia fish has been established.  Consultation and training in the maintenance of the farm is a high priority. The fish will add much needed protein to the diet of El Porvenir families.

5.  Community Tree  Nursery. Community tree nurseries are the primary mechanisms in reforesting the land. In the last two years approximately 15,000 trees have been planted on the hillsides around El Porvenir.

6.  Vegetable Gardens. A poor diet is the norm for the families in El Porvenir, influenced by the lack of meat as well as the lack of a diverse diet.  A vegetable garden was set up this summer next to the school. Three more are planned for the community. These gardens will serve as demonstrations so that peole can see the benefits with their own eyes. When people see the benefits it is hoped that they will attempt to duplicate the ideas.

7.  Model Farms. Model farms are composed of crops, medicinal plants, fruit trees, and small animals such as chickens, goats, or rabbits. The community would like to set-up five model farms as demonstration. Model farms are larger in scale than vegetable gardens.
