History and Goals of Oaxaca
El Porvenir is one of the seven communities Floresta ministers to in Oaxaca, Mexico. Located in the eroded highlands, 50 families make El Porvenir their home. El Porvenir is a community that lives in extreme poverty due to the following factors:  1) high levels of erosion and deforestation, 2) loss of soil fertility, 3) poor family nutrition, 4) low annual income (about US$300), In fact, El Porvenir is a subsistence farming community, where they grow barely enough food to live on.  Their diet consists of mostly beans, corn and a few vegetables. Meat is rarely consumed.

The accelerated degradation of the land in El Porvenir raises serious questions about food security. God has especially gifted Floresta and Mision Integral with the tools needed to effectively operate in these situations, teaching people to fish, instead of giving them a fish, while sharing Christ. Through our partnership we hope to walk alongside El Porvenir, Floresta and Mision Integral.

God has been working in the lives of the people in El Porvenir. It is exciting to see the changes taking place. Families have piped water now. The churches have been greatly encouraged by Pastor Galdino's visits.  The innovative rural stoves have been well received and the community tree nursery is operating well, generating seedlings which are transplanted to the hillsides. Thousands of seedlings were planted this year. SBPC's Bible School raised money to provide 21 sheep for the community. The sheep are reproducing and will provide food and income for families in the community.
