We have joined hands with the staff of Tumutumu Hospital in Karatina, Kenya to improve the health of the people in their region. This partnership links together several US congregations, the Presbyterian Church of East Africa, Tumutumu Hospital, and the Medical Benevolence Foundation (PCUSA).
Tumutumu Hospital Partnership History
Since the early 1990’s Solana Beach Presbyterian Church has been investigating the emerging trend in missions, that of forming long term partnerships between congregations in the United States and churches, communities and organizations in other countries. In 1996, the search for partners began in earnest.
In the summer of 1998 a member of SBPC visited Tumutumu Hospital in Kenya. Tumutumu is a hospital on the west side of the foothills of Mount Kenya and serves mostly Kikuyu tribal people in the Nyeri district. It is a 90-year-old mission hospital established by Scottish missionaries in the early part of the 20th century. Tumutumu Hospital is now part of the ministry of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa, the indigenous Presbyterian Church in Kenya and a ministry partner of the Presbyterian Church (USA). Goals for the Tumutumu Hospital Partnership
Our partnership with Tumutumu Hospital is all about RELATIONSHIPS. The buildings that we construct and the projects that we undertake are a symbol of our unity in Christ. We seek to:
1. Unite with people different from us, to build the bridges of fellowship and the bonds of friendship.
2. To visit each other and offer hospitality to one another as we seek to understand the home countries and lives of all of the people involved.
3. To pray for one another
4. To discern together how the Lord would have us carry out his healing ministry in rural Kenya.
5. To jointly improve the health status of the people of the Tumutumu region in Kenya.
Getting Involved
If you or your church would like to become involved with the Tumutumu Hospital. We need people to visit the hospital, pray for the hospital (prayer letter), and give financially to support the mission of the hospital.
Please email the SBPC Tumutumu Coordinator for more information and to become involved.
